Local Author Makes Okra Picks List

Yellow Stonefly, Tim Poland's second novel, is one of 20 titles named to the Okra Picks Fall 2018 List. Published quarterly by the Southern Independent Book Alliance, Okra Picks recognizes the best in fiction and non fiction by Southern writers, set in the south or about the south.

Poland draws contemporary Appalachian characters in mountain communities and the world of fly fishing. The dialog rings with the familiar voice of friends and neighbors through his protagonist Sandy, who slogs through her days carrying for the elderly at a nursing home and frees her mind wading the creeks in the surrounding mountains. She works to come to terms with her tragic past while dealing with the fearsome struggles of aging - her own and that of her lover, her friends and those for whom she cares. As nature turns violent and new troubles come to the mountains Sandy has to find new strength to protect those he loves.

Tim Poland is professor emeritus of English at Radford University. His fiction, poetry and nonfiction have appeared in a variety of literary magazines.

Poland will discuss his book, which continues the story of The Safety of Deeper Water, Tuesday, November 27, at 7 pm. Pre-order Yellow Stonefly in the store or online.
