Author Event July 25: Gregory Rosenthal and "Beyond Hawai'i
Roanoke College professor Gregory Rosenthal will discuss his new book, Beyond Hawaiʻi - Native Labor in the Pacific World, Wednesday, July 25 at 7 pm at Book No Further. The book tells the stories of forgotten indigenous workers and how their labor shaped the Pacific World, the global economy, and the environment.
In the century following the death of Captain James Cook in 1779 to the rise of the sugar plantations in the 1870s, thousands of native Hawaiian men left to work on ships and in in California, the Arctic Ocean and throughout the Pacific Ocean. From sandalwood harvesting to whaling, guano harvesting, and gold mining, these migrant workers were essential to the expansion of transnational capitalism and global ecological change.
